Clarity Consent Mode

This guide explains how to use the Microsoft Clarity Consent Mode feature in WPConsent to keep your website’s analytics compliant with privacy laws like GDPR.

Here is a documentation article for your WPConsent plugin users, based on the technical description you provided.

This guide explains how to use the Microsoft Clarity Consent Mode feature in WPConsent to keep your website’s analytics compliant with privacy laws like GDPR.

Microsoft Clarity Consent Mode is a privacy-focused feature that changes how Clarity works on your site.

Instead of blocking the Clarity script completely until a user gives consent, this mode allows Clarity to load immediately in a cookie-less state. This means no tracking cookies are stored on the user’s device.

When the user makes a choice on your WPConsent banner (e.g., clicks “Accept All”), the plugin automatically communicates this preference to Microsoft Clarity, which then begins full tracking with cookies only if consent was given.

Clarity Consent Mode is enabled by default in WPConsent.

If you need to check or change this setting, you can find it here:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, navigate to WPConsent > Settings > Advanced.
  2. Find the Clarity Consent Mode toggle.
  3. Ensure it is enabled to use this feature.

Important Requirements: For Clarity Consent Mode to function, you must:

  • Have the WPConsent consent banner enabled.
  • Have the Microsoft Clarity script installed on your website (whether through a plugin, theme, or custom code).
  • Have the Microsoft Clarity service configured in the WPConsent Services (either through the scanner or by adding the service manually).

How It Works

  1. Initial Page Load: A visitor lands on your site. The Clarity script loads immediately, but in its privacy-friendly, cookie-less mode.
  2. User Gives Consent: The visitor interacts with your WPConsent banner and saves their preferences (e.g., “Accept All” or “Save Preferences”).
  3. Consent is Communicated: WPConsent automatically sends the user’s choices to Clarity’s API. It maps your “Statistics” category to analytics_Storage and your “Marketing” category to ad_Storage.
  4. Full Tracking Begins: If the user granted consent, Clarity receives the “granted” signal and starts its full tracking, placing cookies as permitted. If consent is denied, Clarity remains in its limited, cookie-less state.

The plugin automatically detects the Clarity script on your page, so no manual configuration is needed.
